Form reviews

It's official. If I don't get my butt into class tomorrow, I shall be hunted down with small, yappy dogs and tortured. (This is coming from a friend. She specifically said that she's got a dog that jumps really high, so I'd best get there!!!)

I'm going to work on material that I need to practice tonight. I need to practice some kicks (Hook kick comes to mind). I need to practice Bassai and Nahainchi Cho Dan. I THINK I know NCD, but am not 100% on the fine tuning. I have to keep practicing. I will do the basic forms tonight and make sure I know them. I know Keecho Hyung Il Bu, Ee Bu and Sam Bu. I also know Pyung Ahn Cho Dan, Ee Dan, Sam Dan (well, yeah, I BETTER!), Sa Dan and Oh Dan (again, I BETTER!). I feel confident that I can do Sam Dan. LOL!! I think Sa Dan I'd need to practice a little more...wait..."splat!" to the left, "splat!" to the right...ummm, gotta think on that one. It's the interesting form where you're doing a "grab the collar, twist, kick, punch, punch" type of move...

Goals are achievable

It's beginning to feel like Autumn. Since we had that all day rain yesterday, you'd think that it would be humid, but it's not. It's actually hinting at being cool. I love this weather! We have all the windows in the apartment open. It's wonderful.

I'm going to go outside in a little while and practice Pyung Ahn Cho Dan. I think I actually have it now. Ms. S refreshed my memory on the last part I was messing up. Now that I have that, I SHOULD be able to actually do the form and do it right!!! I disappointed myself for forgetting it, but if I practice and practice some more, I'll be able to pick it back up. My next step is going to be working on Bassai. Those are a couple of forms I don't want to forget. I have Keecho Hyung Il Bu, Ee Bu and Sam Bu, plus Pyung Ahn Cho Dan, Pyung Ahn Ee Dan, Sam Dan, Sa Dan, Oh Dan, then Bassai, Nahainchi Cho Dan. I know Sip Soo, but am not really supposed to know it until 4th Dan, so I'll practice it just to know it. I don't want to lose my skill. It'll be adjusted to work in the BTK specs anyway.

Good news on the weight front---I have lost 2.5 pounds in 2 weeks, so that's a plus for me. It means that if I keep eating right and get in exercise, I'll manage to get back to where I was at Christmas, 2007. I will do it.

Wake up call

Doing forms requires that you know the forms and that you can perform them. The forms are, in this order: Kee Cho Hyung Il Bu, Kee Cho Hyung Ee Bu, Kee Cho Hyung Sam Bu, Pyung Ahn Cho Dan, Pyung Ahn Ee Dan, Pyung Ahn Sa Dan, Pyung Ahn SAM Dan, Pyung Ahn Oh Dan, Bassai, Nahainchi Cho Dan, Nahainchi Ee Dan, Nahainchi Sam Dan, Sip Soo and so forth. The forms I Know are all three Kee Cho forms, *all the Pyung Ahn forms*, Bassai, Nahainchi Cho Dan and Sip Soo (which is a fourth Dan form, in case anyone's interested in that piece of trivia!).

Last night, the Dans were instructed to perform Pyung Ahn Oh Dan. I know it. What did I do? Pyung Ahn SAM Dan. AGAIN!!! What the heck is up with my mind?? Ms. S says I'm psyching myself out. I probably am. I was so focused on trying to get the technique part of the class down that I blew the forms, where all the technique comes together. Does this mean that I don't deserve my black belt? Am I not that good, in reality?? I'm now doing some serious thinking about my training methods and what made me achieve my goals.

When I first started out, I did every single form I was learning at work. I needed an outlet to practice and it was a good thing to "show off". It became harder to do that at work because we frequently have visitors and having someone doing kicks and jumps in their cubicle is not a professional thing. I was told to stop (this was a few years ago). When I was at the old place, before all the changes started, we would practice forms at every class. Forms are important, despite what people may think. I've caught flack at work for "Why are you taking martial arts if you can't defend yourself?" Well, first of all, I wasn't taking the classes for defense. I was taking them because I wanted to get fit. Along the way, I fell in love with martial arts and have since decided to take it seriously!

Last night I voiced an objective I have that I've not spoken out loud before. I want to achieve my third Dan by the time I'm 50. I'm 43 now. I earned my Cho Dan last year. I MIGHT be able to test for Ee Dan next year, depending on how hard I train and how I learn the forms and one steps. Once I reach that goal, I will have to wait 3 years before I can test for Sam Dan. I will be 47 if I test next year. I WANT that third Dan. I WANT to get to SA Dan! I want to reach Oh Dan before I turn 60. It's an achievable goal. The thing I have to do is practice. Then practice again. And more practice.

Post class

Why the heck was I nervous about this class? Was it because I have a low sense of self esteem? Possibly. Possibly because I didn't know what to expect and therefore expected the worst? I don't know, but once I started showing Mrs. S. my forms, everything settled down. I felt like I had a captive audience, one who expected to see perfection and yet was understanding that I felt odd. I haven't worked on forms in a really long time, so this was a good thing for me. I felt that I was showing them that I am capable of going into their school and performing at a high level. You know what? I wasn't showing them. I was showing myself!

I pretty much glued myself to Ms. S for the duration of class. I like her. She has a great sense of humor, and I found out that she teaches her kids to do a middle knife hand block as "a cup of tea and slicing bread" (you are basically holding one hand in front of your sternum, palm up, flat and the opposite hand is out in front of you as if you're slicing something.). That was a good thing to learn. I told her that we learned Pyhung an Sam Dan and Pyhung an Sa Dan as "Superman" and "splat!" for certain parts of the form. I did Pyhung an Cho Dan and goofed up part of it. I wasn't remembering my forms properly because of nerves or something, but I caught it and stepped back to the point where I lost it.

It was funny to see these guys realize that I was Aidan's mom. They've only seen me twice in the kids' class, out of uniform, and again twice on Saturdays. I had a bit of fun when Ms. M recognized me as Aidan's mom, but also as a black belt.

I won't be participating in the Dan pre-test on Tuesday. It's an assessment of people's abilities. Mrs. S said it was a "benchmark" of fitness and ability. Should be fun when I finally get to jump in on one. Of course, I have to learn the names of the blocks/kicks/punches/etc. That's something I need to put out there. I need lots of work on the Korean. In my last school, we didn't use the Korean terminology all that often. We switched from calling the first form "Basic Form #1" to "Keechyo Hyung Il Bu" about the time we started having Master St. James attend our belt tests. Having gone through two belt tests at USMA, I'm sure I'll be able to attend a belt test at BTK with little difficulty. I'm going to start working on my terminology and studying. This has to be treated like a university program in order for me to excel. I prefer to think that I'm learning at a higher degree of education, so I'll get myself into that mindset now.

Who turned on Summer and Martial Arts babbling

Please tell me WHO decided that 99 degrees was a good temperature for May 19th?? Can we say "wicked HOT"?? Yep, it was that kind of a day!! Hotter than Hades (almost) and certainly NOT comfortable!! Very much a "stay inside in the air conditioning" type of day. My office is already at super freeze mode, which means I wear a sweater most of the day, but going out at night, I don't need it. I also won't run the a/c in my car because 1. Gas prices are outrageous and 2. I don't need air until I pick up Aidan from school. HE needs the a/c. Since I'm "old" (2 weeks and I'll be "older still") and get chilled easily, I don't run the air.

Aidan and I went to class tonight. I got Mr. T to work with him on forms and technique. We really worked on his front stances. Since he was in Young Warriors and was bumped up when he reached black belt in there, he's never had the opportunity to correct his stances. Tonight we worked very hard on correcting his stances. He's a brown belt and is just now getting the stance correct. Fortunately, the older Mr. B (he's a third Dan, working toward fourth) was very patient and worked hard with him tonight to help him correct his stances.

I worked on forms during class. I really like doing forms better than I like sparring or some of the other things. The joint locks are fun, the weapons are fun, but I prefer the forms myself. It's somehow soothing and helps me refocus. It's somehow meditative as well as thought provoking. I can turn off my mind and just put myself into the matter at hand, that of doing the forms.
We ran through Kee Cho Hyung Il Bu, Kee Cho Hyung Ee Bu and Kee Cho Hyung Sam Bu, then Pyung Ahn Cho Dan. After that, we worked on Pyung Ahn Ee Dan, then Sam Dan, Sah Dan and then Oh Dan. We didn't work on any of the higher forms, but that's fine by me. I was able to refocus and get my head wrapped around the forms properly. I always mess up and confuse Sam Dan and Sah Dan. I call Sam Dan "Superman". I call Sah Dan "Splat!" I call them so for the way they look when you're doing them. Sam Dan has a move that looks like Superman puffing out his chest. Sah Dan starts out with a "Splat!" to the left, then a "splat" (two open hands, palms outward, one in a high block, one in a low block). I really like those forms. I like Pyung Ahn Oh Dan best though. That one's a fun one.

Next month we're starting a new curriculum at the dojang. We'll be working on Tae Kwan Do instead of Tang Soo Do. I'll still be a black belt, but my forms are now going to change. As it's standing, it'll be interesting to see how things work out for the black belt test in November. I'm supposed to be learning Jin Do, but nobody's worked on that form in several weeks. For my second Dan, I have to know Jin Do and Nahainchi Ee Dan. I just have to start working on them. I'm debating on whether or not I should attend the black belt class tomorrow. If I go, I'm not sure they'll be working on forms or if they'll be working on sparring. I'll have to play that one by ear. I don't know if I want to skip out and stay home or not yet. It all depends on how my day goes tomorrow.

Saturday catch up

Real quick "fly by" catch up.
Last night was the gup test at the dojang. It was a pretty good test. We've got two new Cho Dan Bo's and a couple of kids who are moving up in the ranks toward that goal.
My kids also tested last night. My son needs a lot of work on his forms--he had some issues with Pyung Ahn Oh Dan...I could see that and I wasn't on the board!!
He needs to learn the co-ordination between his hands and feet. I'll work with him on that. I think he'll be learning Pyung Ahn Sah Dan for his next form. I'll have to really work with him. If he won't work with me, he'll have to work with another one of the black belts because I want him to be as good as he can possibly be. He's trying out for the competition team next weekend (that was his idea, not mine!), so I have to help him get ready for that.
I didn't see Miss A's test as she was hidden in the crowd, but hubby says she did pretty well. I did see her do Pyung Ahn Cho Dan. Other than a habit of doing a backfist that is WAY higher than I think it should have been, it looked good.

I'm going to Shreveport today with my hubby. We're celebrating our anniversary a week late. Some friends of his from work invited him to go and asked if I'd go along, so we decided to make a day of it. The kids are going to friends' houses and we're gone. It'll be fun. It's just a day trip, so it'll be a quick out and back.

What a fun evening!!

Okay, color me crazy, but tonight I had one of the BEST workouts I have *ever* had since I joined martial arts in 2004! We went back to the old stuff--we did old combinations we haven't done in absolutely forever (well, since 2006!). We did a combination of stepping out with your left foot, downblock, reverse inside/outside block, front snap kick, reverse punch.
We did front snap kick, roundhouse, back kicks. Inside/outside kick, roundhouse, reverse ridge-hand...no, wait, that was just a plain ridge-hand,. I love doing the "old" things! I like it much better than the Ho Sin Sul!! I really enjoy it. I am not a spar-er. I don't like sparring and will be the first to admit to it. I know it has a purpose, so I will do it without complaint. I actually enjoy it if it's with a good partner who gives a good dialog/return on my punches, kicks, whatever. I had that on Wednesday with Mr. T. We worked very hard on sparring--every time I hit him with my right hand (I'm severely right-handed!), he blocked it easily. I know I have to work on that, so that's on the agenda. (I should also work on adding in some weight lifting to work my triceps, but that's another thing I have on the books...)

After the combinations, we moved into doing our forms. We did the Kee-cho forms one after another, then did Pyung Ahn Cho Dan (which Amanda now tells me she "remembers" finally!), then Pyung Ahn, Ee Dan, Sam Dan, Oh Dan, Sah Dan, Bassai, Nahainchi Cho Dan and then Sip Soo. I didn't work on Nahainchi Ee Dan because my memory of the form is fuzzy at best. We'll look at practicing that hopefully next class.

Friday night is the test and I'm looking forward to that. I'm working at it. I have to be there as an instructor, because I'm working with the Little Ninja and Young Warrior class with Mrs. T. It's going to be fun. My kids are both testing at that test. I hope they do well. I just want to make sure they know their material and can do it well enough to pass the test.
